It used to work fine and I use it as a backup, but now nothing. Could it be that I may have removed it when not safe to do so. ? What can I do ?
There is one major problem with most computer backup procedures. Usually after a backup is made, all of the information and data stays in the same place as it always was. However, there are many disasters that could befall your data and computer that make it worthwhile to look into online backups as a precautionary measure. Online data backups will allow you to save a copy of your file or files in a hard drive that cannot be destroyed at the same time as your computer. This way, even if you experience theft or a natural disaster such as a fire or flood you will still have your data.
Is it safe?
Many people are a little bit unsure of putting their data online. After all, if the information can be accessed by them from any computer, doesn’t that mean that the data can be accessed by everybody? Yes and no. While it is theoretically possible for a different person to get into your data as it is stored through an online data backup, the chances of this actually happening are slim to none as long as you’re using a reputable service.
You also have the option of doing something on your end to make sure that the data stays secure. If you can get your hands on any backup software that can encrypt the data, then you should do this. Encrypted data cannot be stolen without considerable effort. Just make sure that you remember what program you used to encrypt it in the first place.
Are online backups easy to use?
Yes! Online data backup services generally only require that you upload the files that you want saved. Then, the files are saved for you, and that’s it! As you can imagine, online data backup services are becoming more and more widespread. You should also be able to access your online data backup from anywhere in the world. While I do not recommend using this as your only form of data backup I highly recommend using an online data back solution as part of a holistic approach to data security.
How fast are they?
This is going to depend by and large on the type of internet connnection that you have. If you are still going online with a dialup connection, then you should not look into this type of data backup. It will just take far too long to get your backup done, and during that time, you could easily have just put all the files onto DVDs and give them to a friend for safekeeping. If you have a high speed internet connection – either cable or DSL, then you’re in luck and this will not be a problem at all. Just log in, get an account, and upload to your heart’s content.
How much space will you have?
This is going to depend on the backup service that you choose in the end. However, most of the spaces available range between about 100MB and several GB of space with most of them offering at least 1GB of storage space to get started with.
Online data backups are going to become an absolute necessity for the smart computer owner. I wouldn’t live without one and use mine every single day at the very least.
Any backup information would be appreciated.
The one you can buy is easy to lose I would like a backup.
I’ve been taking care of computer networks for small businesses since 1988 and one thing that I’ve learned is that very few maintain a good, recoverable backup. If you ask a small business owner what would happen if all of their data suddenly disappeared the response will be – a blank stare followed by “what do you mean?” or a look of abject horror followed by “could that really happen?”
When discussing backups with a customer I always explain that computers are made up of parts that WILL eventually wear out; in particular their hard drive which is where all their data is stored. Many users are under the impression that once they purchase and set up a server or desktop – they’re done and it should run forever. Unfortunately this is not the case.
Until the advent of broadband internet connections many small businesses used a tape drive to back up their data. The idea was that the backup would be set to run automatically every night, someone would arrive in the morning and remove the tape, inserting a new tape for the next night’s backup and taking the current backup home with them. That way a good backup was always offsite and safe should there be a catastrophe.
The problems that I’ve seen encountered with this procedure were: the employee assigned to the task would forget to change the tapes, the employee assigned to the task (believe it or not) would leave the company and no one remembered to tell the employee that replaced them that it was their job to handle the backup, the employee would forget to take the tape offsite, the backup logs were never checked to insure that there was indeed a good backup and that everything that should be backed up was, in fact, being backed up, the tape drive was never cleaned – sometimes resulting in corrupt backups that were unrecoverable, configuration and scheduling problems with the tape backup program itself, and, tapes were swapped every day but the backup wasn’t running. All of these problems were discovered “too late” to help the company.
Then along came broadband connections and remote online backup became feasible. (I had tried it years ago with a dial-up modem connection but it was just too slow.)
Here are the features that a good online backup service should offer: reporting and logging of all backup sessions, good file compression, notification by email if a backup doesn’t run, unattended operation, ability to set the number of backups to keep on file, strong encryption, ability to backup mapped drives, top notch live customer support, “remote control” assistance should it be needed and – the backup is “offsite” so should anything happen to your business – it’s lifeblood will be safe.
After much research and comparison I found a partner that meets all of the requirements that I know my customers need. Their service is second to none and they always go the “extra mile” for my customers. For more information go to www.safe-online-backup.com.
So, why online backup? Because it’s safe, automatic, reliable and you don’t have to count on an employee’s memory to insure your company’s future.

can this VNC server review all the logs of the backup?please help me im doing my thesis and we propose a backup monitoring system..where we can remotely access and review the logs by installing the IIS so that the application can be access..by the way how to import a .txt file into a php or asp language?so that it is not hard for the user to access and review the logs they will login in the server in a web with a user account and password to access the files.
My Wii Remote that came with the system broke. I have two others but every time I try to re-sync them(pressing the red buttons) they sync as the #2 and #3 remotes and i cant play anything. Does anyone now how to reset the system so it reads one of my backup remotes as the main one??? Thanks
uhh…its called using a script with your ftp app
The unix machine and the Windows machine are in the same network. I can do the commands:
tar -cf file.tar /usr/home/file
bzip2 -f /usr/home/file.tar
How do I send the bzip2 file accross the network onto the windows computer? Is there a special unix command? Does anyone know any imformation regarding this?
