I need a server to set up a client/server network at my home. It needs o have the following minimum specs.
-1 GHz processor
- 512 Megabytes of RAM
- Netowrk interface card capable of 100 megabits per second
- 500GB of backing storage
I also need a network operating system which will
- set up network security
- maintain a backup system
- provide remote access
And I need security software to protect the network, It must enable me to:
- encrypt her data stored on the server
- encrypt her e-mail
- provide protection against viruses, Trojans and worms.
I only have a budget of £2000, so if anyone can help me with these three things, if not then just one of them would be really helpful

I work for a small web design firm. We have one computer that we store all of our files on, and all of our local computers are networked to it. We want to allow one of our off-site workers to access the files on the shared drive. What is the best way to do this? We don’t want to use an online file storage service or anything like that, as it would be slow and cumbersome for local use (we work with large video and image files frequently, and have about a TB of data, not including backups).

Remote access and media streaming would be nice, the but the most important feature is the ability to back up both Mac and Windows files, some > 5 GB. iMac has Tiger now, but plan to upgrade to Leopard.

Best E-mail Server Options For A Small Business?

I work at a small company and we’re trying to find a better solution for e-mail. Currently we use Outlook retrieving mail by POP3 from a hosting service, however their servers are becoming increasingly unreliable. Also, we want all email to be backed up on a local central server instead of having mailboxes on each PC or depending on a remote server for our critical data. I suggested using some service that works by IMAP, but my boss is weary of relying on unreliable ISPs.
The main problem with our system now is that all email retrieved by POP3 has to be stored locally on each PC, which leaves us vulnerable in case of a PC crash or data loss (and also makes accessing our mail from home or by mobile device cumbersome). We’ve tried storing the Outlook mailboxes on a local network file server, but this has proven to be extremely problematic as well, since any lag or glitch on the local network makes Outlook throw a fit.
1) Our internet connection is not reliable enough for us to host the e-mail servers locally
2) We’ve had bad experiences with a number of ISPs in the past, so whoever we go with needs to be extremely reliable and also have proven remote backup solutions, and ideally we want some kind of local backup
3) We send and receive a lot of large file attachments so the service needs to have a large disk quota and fast transfer rates at reasonable cost
Is there any kind of solution like a local IMAP caching server or something like that, which mostly relies on the ISP but allows us to still read already-downloaded mail when the internet connection is down?

Building A will have a conference room with support for wireless network access and videoconferencing and a file/print server. Second building (Building B) is located approximately 5 km. from first building. There is line of sight between the two buildings. Administrative staff (8 employees) will occupy one floor of second building and IT & customer support staff (10 employees) will occupy another floor in this building. Building B will have a file/print server, backup server. Company ISP1 will be used as an ISP to provide broadband ADSL access to the Internet. A VPN will be set up for remote access to the network.

I have a phpbb forum website, which I host with HostGator. I am moving to HyphyHost. I’ve moved regular html websites before through ftp, thats pretty simple, just download the files to my computer, then reupload them. But for this site, I have members and a mysql database. I read that you have to backup your database, but I dont know how to do it. I logged in to cpanel, and found where it says “Backup Wizard – Create a Full backup”, but I dont know what to do after that, or where the backup goes, and I dont know what to do with the backup once its created. How do I upload it or set it up on the new host (the new host has cpanel too)?
Its asking me for the following info, and I dont know if I have to fill it all in or what:

System Backup Best Practices For Sql Servers.?

I have to backup 4 servers, each running an instance of MS SQL and I have to do it well, but inexpensively. I was going to do it this way:
1 copy of Veritas Backup Express
1 Ultrium tape drive
4 copies of Open File Agent
3 copies of Remote Agent
I was going to backup the SQL Dump devices and certain files onto the one Veritas installation. I have a 100 MBit network and the files aren’t large yet, but could grow quite large. I would consider installing 2nd NICs into each of the servers to create a seperate back up LAN segment.
Does this make sense? Is there a better way to backup SQL servers?
