Here´s my question, I want to acces another computer through Internet from my house, to give it maintainance and do backups etc. But my question is how to do it. I know Windows give you the option but I can only do it in a LOCAL NETWORK. I want to know if its posibble to conect through internet and how to do it. For example connect my computer in L.A. to one in Washington or stuff like that.
Plis if anyone has a tutorial. Thanx in advance
Okay, because you’re not a computer person, there’s a MUCH better option for you. It’s called LogMeIn. There’s no options to set, no ports to open, nothing other than installing it, going to their website and connecting to your computer from anywhere (actually that’s how I’m writing this message).http://www.logmein.com/
Sign up for the free one, and “Add Computer” to install the software on the computer you want to control (you could even do it on both computers so you can control either computer from the other.)
Best thing is, it’s free, no setting up other than the install, and it’s 256-bit encrypted meaning no one can intercept what you’re doing and either control your computer and/or see what you’re doing on it.

One potential way is to run RDC (Remote Desktop Connection). You can find it in your start menu under All Programs> Accessories>>Communication. You need to know the ip address of the PC your are trying to connect to but besides that it is really straight forward. To find the IP of the computer you can click Run from it’s start menu and then type “cmd” then press enter. this will bring up the command prompt then type “ipconfig”. this will print the IP on to the screen and now you have what you need.
First you want to enable remote desktop. It’s a checkbox on the remote tab in system properties.
Once you do that you will have create a rule in the router at the remote location called a port forward.
Basically you need to tell your router to forward all requests over port 3389 to the box you want to manage remotely.http://portforward.com/ has some good pages on how to do this.
You’ll need to know the public IP address of the remote location to access it once the forward is set up. (or have a dns record in the public zone that resolves a name to that address)
Good luck!
edit: Matt has a great answer, Logmein is a solid and secure solution. My only beef with it has been that the free version doesn’t allow file sharing between the pc’s. Other than that he’s right on the money, it’s fast, reliable, cheap, and easy!
